A few tips for you that might clear things up a bit :

1.) When attacking rebels, really ALL you need are 8-10 units (1 unit = 40 LC) of Light Cavalry. Anything more than that and your troops won't be gaining more than a couple exp points per battle.

2.) When there is no battle report at all, it means there were no troops in that city to fight. You simply waltzed right on in, took the res and waltzed right back out unchallenged.

3.) If you are hitting lower loyalty (less than 70%), I have found there tends to be fewer (if ANY) troops to battle. You might have to start traveling a LOT further to find those with a loyalty higher than 75-80%.

4.) Don't keep hitting the same rebels over and over. Give them a few hours between hits to regen their resources AND their troops. Spread out attacks over a much larger area.

These are just a few things I've learned over my time here. Others may agree or disagree, but this is what I've found works best for me.
